World Refugee Day 2024

"It has been a week since the "World Refugee Day" was celebrated in Austin, Texas and my daughter still cannot stop talking about it. The Diversity Band, of which my daughter is a member, kicked off the celebrations that followed the naturalization ceremony of refugees in which they were offered the opportunity of US citizenship.
As first-generation immigrants to the United States, the members of the Diversity Band are only too aware of the obstacles and challenges that need to be overcome to be fully integrated into American society while not losing the crucial parts of their own cultural identity. Listening to the stories of war, blood and tears though, was something of an eye opener to all of us by-standers. The 2nd generation immigrants like my daughter and other younger members of the Diversity Band, were dumb founded with the journey that the refugees were brave enough to share. After hearing all these stories, the joyful, euphoric drumming and rhythmic dance that the Diversity Band showcased was heart uplifting and inclusive.
As my daughter later said: “The fact that people were clapping and tapping to the drumming and music must have made them cheerful and hopefully they enjoyed their day today and maybe forgot the hardship that brought them to the US”.  Diversity Band, with their rocking performance and energy brought many a smile amongst the audience. The team members felt fortunate and glad to be a part of the memories of the new citizens during this memorable and bittersweet moment.
The Diversity Band and its popularity in mainstream Austin community, is a perfect example of how America welcomes its diverse population such that they become a part of the colorful fabric of everyday life. With music, there is always hope of a better future."
